iOS App Design for Startup

June 2020

Led design from concept to deployment ready iOS app. App, via an intuitive, engaging interface, helps users reduce food waste and foster community on large corporate campuses. šŸ£

Context

Overview

The social app was designed to reduce corporate food waste by identifying and locating food leftover from the large daily meetings that take place on sprawling corporate campuses.Ā

My Role

As the sole product designer, I was responsible for designing the UI, UX, rendering layouts, and selecting photography. I continuously communicated with my stakeholders regarding progress and was proactive in seeking feedback. I created an experience where users could most effectively find and also report excess food. I designed frameworks and prototypes to share the vision, design principles, and content strategy. This helped to conceptualize ideas, gain alignment, and drive decision making.

Project Brief

āš”ļø The Problem: Companies throw out significant amount of food every day that employees could find and consume or donate/re-purpose.

We decided to focus on the pharmaceutical industry where large campuses are common.Ā

  • Large amounts of daily food waste at large corporate campusesĀ
  • Ineffective communication amongst co-workers about the availability of food
  • Lack of transparence about when food was available to be repurposed

Design Process

I worked closely with the founders to identify the following key goals:

1. Enable posting time sensitive information
2. Encourage team building through participation
3. Promote professional and positive engagement

I laid out an outline for the app.

  • Onboarding
  • Profile
  • Feed
  • Post
  • Explore

These architectural decisions had a major impact on the quality of the user experience and allowed the users to quickly familiarize themselves with useful information.

šŸ“š Research

Based on the goals I concluded it was most effective to create a hybrid between a social app and a food delivery app. To inform the design process, I analyzed food service apps as well as social apps.

Ultimately we decided to use a posting flow very similar to Instagram, because users were most familiar with this process of sharing information.

ā¤µļø User Journey

Efficiencies were created by leveraging existing social design patterns. A critical design challenge that IĀ solved was how to securely add users to a company as the stakeholders did not want a dedicated super user or admin.

Another obstacle arose in designing how users would generate a map of the campus unique to their company. The map would need to be populated byĀ users and then easy to navigate when new users joined. I created a solution in which users could edit their company map and have options to structure buildings, wings, and rooms within a breadcrumb-like hierarchy.

šŸ‘¤ Persona

IĀ helped the client identify the persona that provided the most value which was CSR, HR, and office managers at large corporate campuses.

Creating a B2B solution will provide the most value. A company Ā could use the app for social good, networking, and fostering community.

Design

Design System

I created a design library in Adobe Illustrator, then designed multiple layout iterations in XD to determine the most optimal components and assets.

Results

An iOS app was launched

Based on the design process that I led, we created an app that met the objectives of reducing food waste in large corporate environments.
